FAQ
Where and when is the conference being held?
The conference is being held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on The University of Alabama campus from October 5-6, 2019.
I'm a student. Can I present at this conference?
Absolutely! We welcome student submissions for both papers and posters.
How much time do paper presenters have to present and is there time allotted for Q&A afterwards?
Presenters are allotted 20 min each. There will be time for questions and discussion at the end of each session.
Will there be a Crimson Tide football game while I'm in town?
Unfortunately, no. Tuscaloosa gets very busy on game days, so the conference has been scheduled around the football schedule during a bye week.
I'm flying to Tuscaloosa! Which airport do you recommend?
We recommend that you fly into Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) which is an hour's drive from Tuscaloosa. The next closest major airport is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) which is three hour's drive from Tuscaloosa.
How can I get to and from the airport?
If you're not renting a car at the airport, you can book a shuttle reservation with Scuttle Shuttle (currently $65 one-way/$125 round-trip from BHM to Tuscaloosa and $70 one-way/$130 round-trip from ATL). If you're arriving at these airports around the same time as other conference attendees, we recommend booking together to reduce rates.
What hotel do you recommend? Where else can I stay?
We recommend staying at the Hotel Indigo located near the university and the Black Warrior River. See the Stay page for more details and other suggested hotels.
How do I get to the conference location from, say, Hotel Indigo (and vice versa) via public transportation?
Tuscaloosa Transit Authority runs a free trolley service. The route that runs in the university and downtown area is called the University Shuttle Route. Uber is also available in Tuscaloosa.
I'm driving! Where can I park on The University of Alabama campus? Are there any parking fees?
Parking at UA is free after 6 pm on weekdays and all-day on weekends. See the Venue page for suggested parking lots.
What is the difference between the pre-registration and day-of registration fees?
None! While we highly encourage registration in advance of the conference in order to predict attendance, the day-of registration fee is the same as the pre-registration fee ($25).
I'd like to sample Tuscaloosa's culinary offerings while I'm in town. Do you have any recommendations?
We do, indeed! See the Eat page for more details.
I'm looking for a local watering hole close to the conference location. Do you know of any?
Why, yes! See the Drink page for more details.
I'm staying in town for a few days. What can I do while I'm here?
Lucky you! There's a whole host of things to do and see in the Tuscaloosa/Birmingham area. See the Visit page for more details.
Help! I'm here in Tuscaloosa and someone said "Roll Tide!" to me. What on earth does that mean and what do I do?
"Roll Tide" is a rallying cry for the Alabama Crimson Tide athletic teams. It is also commonly used as a greeting or parting phrase. Etiquette dictates that you respond with "Roll Tide!"
